Smithfields Stud

Smithfields Stud, the breeding arm of Greg and Mike Smith's equine operation, MGS Equine Investments, produces quality show horses and ponies with movement and temperament. The foundation sire, Rosevean Gale Force (imp), a son of the famous Bwlch Zephyr possessed outstanding conformation, temperament and movement. His progeny are renown for their outstanding temperaments and suitability as show saddle ponies and galloways.

When Greg visited New Zealand to judge Christchurch Show in 1991, he was very impressed with a number of ponies he saw by the imported English Riding Pony Stenigot Nightingale. Nightingale was exported to New Zealand as a two year old after having been Supreme Champion at the Ponies of Britain Show in 1978. The stud was able to obtain Glen Cree Classic (imp), a black 14.1 hh stallion from New Zealand by Nightingale possessing the qualities of refinement and size required. Crossing Classic over the Gale Force mares produced extra height and refinement. Fine examples of this cross have been Smithfields Elegance and Smithfields Evening. These two ponies won all progeny classes in which they entered at the Queensland Riding Pony Show over a period of three years. The last of the Classics foaled in 1998.

Two of Gale Force’s sons, Smithfields Majestic (13.2hh) and Smithfields Magistrate (15hh) were retained at stud. They are full brothers out of an Anglo mare. Majestic won Supreme Led Championships at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Royal shows.  In 1997 he also was awarded Resreve Champion Ridden Saddle Pony at Sydeny Royal.
In 2000 and 2001, Kirreway Democracy (by Syon Splendour (imp) out of a Rotherwood Acrobat (imp) mare), also stood at stud. This 15hh brown horse  produced up to height stock characterised by exceptional quality and prettiness of head before being gelded and successfully shown as a galloway hack winning  Champion Novice hack at Melbourne Royal and Queensland Galloway of the Year..

In 2005 and 2006 we crossed some of our mares with the 12hh imported stallion, Bradmore Toy Soldier in addition to standing our Majestrate bred 15.2hh stallion, Garden Vale Stylish Image who has had tremendous success in the show ring, winning Championships at Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Toowoomba Royals as well as the Arabian Nationals.
With the Equine Flu, Greg having a severe accident and the Global Financial Crisis the stud suspended its breeding program for a period of 4 years. In 2015 Greg and Mike retired from active showing to concentrate on giving back to the sport they have loved.

In 2010,Smithfields Stud relocated from from its training barn in sub-tropical Brisbane, Queensland to a beautiful, picturesque 50 acres at Boyland which is located close to the tourist township of Canungra and nestled under the beautiful Mount Tamborine. In 2011 our broodmares and young stock which have been running out at our 30 acre property at Beaudesert, 45 mins south of Brisbane will be moved to the new property and a limited breeding program will undertaken.

The Boyland property has a lovely soft climate, good pasture and outstanding views.
